Religion in Bangladesh

Islam is the largest religion of Bangladesh; Muslims constitute 88 % of the population followed by Hindus who constitute 11 %. The remainder of Bangladeshis practices other religions such as Buddhism and Christianity. Muslims constitute 90 percent of the population. Most Muslims in Bangladesh are Sunnis, but there is a small Shia community. Most of those who are Shia reside in urban areas. Although these Shias are few in number, Shia observance commemorating the martyrdom of Ali's sons, Hasan and Husayn, is widely observed by the nation's Sunnis. Hinduism is the second largest religious affiliation in Bangladesh, covering 10 to 11 percent of the population as of 2001 census. In terms of population, Bangladesh is the third largest Hindu state of the world after India, Nepal. About 0.7% (or just over 1,000,000 people) of Bangladesh population adheres to the Theravada school of Buddhism. Christianity arrived in what is now Bangladesh during the late sixteenth to early seventeenth century AD, through the Portuguese traders and missionaries. Christians account for approximately 0.3% of the total population. Roman Catholicism is dominant, the rest being Orthodox and Protestant.

B.Ed degree is mandatory for the teaching profession in higher primary schools and high schools. The minimum qualification required for entry into B.Ed is Bachelor of Arts (B.A) or Bachelor of Science (BSc). Bangladesh. Professional engineer (see below for various abbreviations) is the term for registered or licensed engineers in some countries who are permitted to offer their professional services directly to the public. The term Professional engineer & the actual practice of professional engineering is legally defined and protected by a government body. In some jurisdictions only registered or licensed Professional Engineers are permitted to use the title, or to practice Professional Engineering.

Customs of Bangladeshi People

If meeting with people for dinner here are some basic rules on etiquette and protocol. If invited to a meal it is rude to flatly turn the invitation down. One should always use less direct language to suggest that it may be difficult such as "I will try." or "I will have to see". Meals both inside the house and outside will usually be same sex. Many people eat with their hands and it may be that you share food from a common dish. It would not be seen as impolite if you asked for utensils. Ensure you wash your hands before eating.. Guests are generally served first then the oldest, continuing in order of seniority. Do not start eating until the oldest person at the table begins. You will constantly be urged to take more food. Simply saying "I'm full" will be taken as a polite gesture and not accepted at face value. It is therefore always best to pace yourself to allow for more servings. The left hand is considered unclean so only eat, pass dishes or drink with the right hand.

Education in Bangladesh

The three main educational systems in Bangladesh, ordered by decreasing student numbers, are General Education System, Madrasah Education System, and Technical - Vocational Education System. Other systems include a Professional Education System. Each of these three main systems is divided into four levels: is Primary Level (years 1 to 5), Secondary Level (years 6 to 10), Higher Secondary Level (years 11 and 12), Tertiary Level. Tertiary education in Bangladesh takes place at 11 government and 20 private universities. Students can choose to further their studies in engineering, technology, agriculture and medicine at a variety of universities and colleges. At all levels of schooling, students can choose to receive their education in English or Bengali. Private schools tend to make use of English-based study media while government-sponsored schools use Bengali.

Food

The main food of Bangladesh is vaat, dal, & fish. Western food is available in all major hotels and most of the big restaurants in import cities. But local dishes are normally far better and more exotic. Curries of many kinds around, cooked with proper spices and hot curry powders, including Korma, Rezala, Bhoona and Masala Gosht, Chicken, mutton, beef, fish and prawns, Chicken Afghani, Chicken Baghdadi, Chicken Kashmiri, Chicken Tikka, boti kabab, shutli kabab and a variety of fish curries should be tried. Rice in the form of pulao, biriani-with rice and mutton or chicken and khichuri are available in any reasonable restaurant. Those who do not care for rice dishes can try mughlai parata, plain parata or naan, which go very well with curries. Seafood and sweet-water fish are available in most of the towns. Fish-lovers should not miss smoked hilsa, fresh bhetki and chingri (lobster/king prawns) malaikari, Prawn dopyaza. Chai is the milky sweet tea available almost everywhere. Lassi is the refreshing yogurt drink. Green coconut water is a fine, safe and refreshing drink. Desert item is Misti Dhohi, sweetened yogurt, Halua a common dessert ranging from egg halua to carrot, sooji or wheat cream, almond, pistachio, nuts and so on. Sandesh is milk based dessert, one of the best available, Zorda: sweetened rice with nuts, Firni is rice flour cooked in milk, sugar and flavoring, Rasgolla & Kalojam.

Arts & Literature in Bangladesh

Bangladesh has a rich tradition of Art culture. Speciniens of ancient terracota and pottery show remarkable artistry. Modern painting was pioneered by artists like Zainul Ahedin, Qamrul Hasan. Anwarul Haque, Shafiuddin Ahnied, Shafiqul Amin, Rashid Chowdhury and S.M. Sultan. Zainul Ahedin earned worldwide fame by his stunning sketches of the Bengal Famine in 1943. Other famous artists of Bangladesh are Abdur Razzak, Qayyum Chowdhury, Murtaza Baseer, Aminul Islam, Debdas Chakraborty, Kazi Abdul Baset, Syed Jahangir, and Mohammad KibriaThe earliest available specimen of Bengali literature is about a thousand years old. During the mediaeval period. Bengali Literature developed considerably with the patronage of Muslim rulers. Chandi Das, Daulat Kazi and Alaol are some of the famous poets of the period. The era of modern Bengali Literature began in the late nineteenth century Rabindranath Tagore, the Nobel Laureate is a vital part of Bengali culture. Kazi Nazrul Islam, Michael Madhusudan Datta. Sarat Chandra Chattopadhaya, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhaya, Mir Mosharraf Hossain and Kazi Ahdul Wadud are the pioneers of modern Bengali Literature.

Language in Bangladesh

The official language in Bangladesh is Bangla, sometimes called Bengali. It is the first language of more than 98 percent of the population. It is written in its own script. Bangle is a 4th language in the world. The UNESCO has declared 21st February as The International Mother Language Day to be observed globally in recognition of the sacrifices of the Bangla language martyrs who laid their lives for establishing the rightful place of Bangla. The proclamation came in the form of a resolution unanimously adopted at the plenary of the UNESCO at its headquarters in Paris in November 1999. In its resolution the UNESCO said-' 21st February be proclaimed International Mother Language Day throughout the world to commemorate the martyrs who sacrificed their lives on this very day in 1952.

Sports in Bangladesh

While Kabbadi is the national game of Bangladesh, Football and Cricket are more popular with Cricket being the most popular sport in Bangladesh followed very closely by Football. The Bangladesh national cricket team won the ICC Trophy in 1997 against Kenya which enabled them to participate in the 1999 Cricket World Cup. In their very first World Cup, Bangladesh beat Pakistan and Scotland in the first round. In 2000, the Bangladesh national cricket team was granted Test cricket status and became eligible to play other test playing nations. At various times Bangladesh has beat Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and West Indies; more importantly Bangladesh beat India national cricket team and South Africa national cricket team in 2007 Cricket World Cup. They have also beaten West Indies in 2007 ICC World Twenty20. In July 2009 Bangladesh Cricket Team secured its second ever Test Series win against West Indies. The first one was against Zimbabwe Cricket Team in the 2004–2005 season. Other popular sports include field hockey, tennis, badminton, handball, volleyball, chess, carro games, and kabbadi, which is the national sport of Bangladesh. The Bangladesh Sports Control Board regulates twenty-nine different sporting federations. In 2011, Bangladesh is going to host the ICC Cricket World Cup jointly with India and Sri Lanka.
